LA MEXICANA BAKERY

By Michael Flores

The colorful display of baked goods at La Mexicana Bakery symbolizes the beginning of a new day. Mounds of fresh-baked pastry line the shelves of the glass cases each morning. And just as you begin to admire all those shapes and colors, you find yourself in a flurry of activity as the employees rush to take orders from eager customers.

It's the urge for authentic Mexican pastry that brings people to La Mexicana. Jesus Becerra, owner and pastry chef, makes breads and cookies using the same recipes that have been in his family for several generations. He was only seven years old when he made his first batch of pastry while helping out at his father’s bakery. Jesus never outgrew his passion for baking. In 1989, he and his wife, Sandra, bought the very popular La Reyna Bakery. They kept the name until three years ago when it became clear that their products stood on their own merit.

"We didn't invent Mexican pastry, but we've perfected it," Jesus said. And there are many who will agree with him. La Mexicana Bakery has a large following that goes beyond the South Austin neighborhood where it sits. It's a favorite among caterers, and regulars often stop by to pick up pastry for their friends and relatives who live across the country.
